Family papers, 1774-1844.

Deeds, correspondence, releases, a will, property maps, accounts, memoranda, court papers, etc. (1774-1844) which involve Colden, his brother Alexander (d. 1796), his mother Henrietta Maria Colden, and his wife Eliza. Most relate to property litigation, title, and sales of land in Newburgh, Lansingburg, Pittstown, and Cambridge, New York. Also included is a receipt book of Alexander Colden, a ship captain of New York City, recording expenses of his ship "Active" for May 1794-April 1796. In addition there are several later receipts pertaining to the settlement of his estate, Henrietta Maria Colden, executrix.

Benjamin Wright (1770-1842) was a prominent land surveyor and engineer. During his career, he surveyed much of the lands along the upper Mohawk and Black River Valleys, which are now situated in Herkimer, Oneida, Lewis, and Jefferson Counties in New York State. Wright was also noted for his advocacy and development of canals and transportation infrastructure in New York State. He was chief engineer in the design and construction of the Erie Canal.
